Question What is the difference between coding and recoding?

Coding (automatic or manual) is suitable only for open-ended questions and variables (i.e. text), and is suitable for a single word or a small number of words which appear frequently. The following question may serve as an example: ''Which is your favourite fruit?'', to which the answers ''apple'', ''apples'', ''an apple'', etc. are coded into the same value.

With recoding you can change numerical and categorical values of a certain variable, which is very useful for charts. An example of a numerical variable can be the joining of age categories into categories of ''under 30'', ''30 – 50'' and ''over 50''. An example of a categorical variable is recoding evaluation marks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 into two categories: ''High'', for 4 and 5, and ''Low'' for 1, 2 and 3.
